General information about hernias

In general, a hernia is characterized by the passage of an organ through a natural orifice. An inguinal hernia is visible above the groin. If the hernia is situated below the groin, it is called a crural hernia. As its’ name indicates, an umbilical hernia is localized at the navel (umbilicus).

Several factors encourage the appearance of a hernia, including carrying heavy objects, constipation, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and even pregnancy. Even if hernias are considered benign, this condition can generate complications at any moment, like intestinal strangling or intestinal occlusion. In most cases, these masses are painless.

Treatment for hernias

In surgical cases for patients suffering from inguinal hernias, hospitalization is necessary. The operation varies from 15 to 30 minutes but can last up to several hours for a voluminous eventration. The intervention involves reducing or reintegrating the mass and closing the orifice with the help of a prothesis.

Once the operation has finished, the patient is transferred to a recovery room for careful observation before returning home. Returning to normal activities is usually done around three weeks after the operation. If there are no post-op complications, there is no need for particular observation.
