Stomach ulcers : the most frequent ones

Stomach ulcers are one of the most frequent stomach pathologies. This inflammation of the stomach wall is generally localised near the lesser curvature of the stomach. The ulcer comprises 2 phases:

  1. Erosion or the disappearance of the level of mucus that protects the stomach’s cells from acid attacks and pepsin.

  2. The ulcer provokes lesion of the stomach wall until breech of the submucosal membrane.

If not treated, ulcers can cause perforation of the abdominal cavity. They can also evolve towards a digestive haemorrhage if the erosion touches a nearby artery. In both cases, an urgent hospitalisation is required.

Other stomach pathologies

Gastritis, hiatal hernia, and cancer are among other types of stomach pathologies.

Stomach cancer is known to mimic the same symptoms as a stomach ulcer. Stomach cancer should be treated by a gastrectomy. This operation consists of directly linking the oesophagus and the small intestine.

Gastritis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the stomach. Above all, gastritis is caused by alcohol abuse, tobacco consumption, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.

Hiatal hernia manifests by the passage of a part of the stomach into the thorax via the hiatal orifice. This pathology is asymptomatic but can cause gastroesophageal reflux.

Certain dietary restrictions can limit symptoms and stomach pain. In all cases, the suppression of alcohol, tobacco, irritating foods, and fizzy drinks is recommended.
