What is gastroenterology ?

Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine studying the digestive system, including pathologies and treatment methods. Various organs are situated within the digestive system, including the the esophogus, the stomach, the liver, the gall bladder, the pancreas, the small intestine, and the large intestine.

It should be noted that gastro-enterology has two main sub-specialties:

  • Hepatology: A branch of medicine concerned with the study, prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases that affect the liver.

  • Proctology: A branch of medicine concerned with the study, prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases that affect the rectum and anus.

If certain symptoms appear, such as black stools, acute or chronic abdominal pain, or red blood in vomit, it is imperative to quickly consult a gastroenterologist. A gastroenterologist can also be consulted for heartburn, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea.

Different gastrointestinal pathologies

Various conditions can cause digestive symptoms which merit a consultation with a gastroenterologist. These conditions can include hemorrhoids, gallstones, Crohn’s disease, bowel obstruction, and cirrhosis. The field of gastroenterology also deals with other conditions such as hepatitis, appendicitis, pancreatitis, proctitis, duodenal or gastric ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome, and celiac disease. Treatment of benign or malignant tumors of the esophagus, stomach, liver, or colon is also concerned by gastroenterology.
