WHAT IS PLASTIC SURGERY?

Plastic surgery is the medical specialty which deals with surgery of the skin and underlying soft tissues. The aim is to heal, repair or improve the appearance of a part of the human body. This kind of surgery can follow an illness, an accident, a congenital malformation, a burn, or simply because of personal choice. Operations are carried out by a plastic surgeon. Plastic surgery, whether esthetic or reconstructive, can generally be broken down into the following categories:

  • breast reconstruction (following surgery to remove a breast tumor for example)
  • hand surgery
  • pediatric plastic surgery
  • esthetic surgery
  • burn surgery
  • cranio-facial surgery (such as rhinoplasty)

THE MAIN OPERATIONS CARRIED OUT IN PLASTIC SURGERY

A number of different operations can be carried out by plastic surgeons such as, for example, facial reconstruction, breast reconstruction or the re-attachment of a severed limb or finger. Other surgeries include rhinoplasty (commonly known as nose jobs), calf, buttock and pectoral implants, as well as reconstructive surgery to correct a congenital malformation such as cleft lip or palate or even to repair the skin following removal of benign or cancerous lesions of the skin (such as melanoma or carcinoma of the skin). Plastic surgeons can also carry out botox injections, microdermal abrasion or injection of collagen and laser treatment of the skin.
