What is an acute abdominal syndrome?

Acute abdominal syndrome is defined as a sudden onset of severe abdominal pain of less than 24 hours duration. It is characterized by a localized pain accompanied by other digestive symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Certain patients present other signs like a fever, an alteration of blood pressure, and fatigue.

In case of abdominal pain, the doctor carries out a clinical examination using pressure, palpation, and measures blood pressure and body temperature. Vaginal or rectal physical examinations, blood tests, and medical imaging might also be carried out to establish a diagnosis.

Causes of acute abdominal syndrome

Acute abdominal syndrome can be provoked a number of possible causes. Some of the most common reasons are peritonitis, perforation of a gastroduodenal ulcer, perforation of an appendix or fallopian tube, or intestinal occlusions. Fever and pain can be caused by an appendicitis or sigmoiditis. When the pain sensation is associated with signs of shock, the syndrome could be caused by a mesentery or myocardial infarction, or by acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis.

Other pathologies can be the origin of acute abdominal syndrome; notably intraperitoneal hemorrhage seen in cases of ectopic pregnancy, or, abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture.
