Principal illnesses of the esophagus

The esophagus can be affected by many diverse conditions, including perforation, and foreign object obstruction.

The principal illnesses that can affect the esophagus are:

  • Esophagitis, or inflammation of the mucous membrane in reaction to aggression.

  • Hiatal Hernia, or the passage of one part of the stomach into the thorax.

  • Esophageal atresia, a congenital condition that manifests with the absence of a segment of the esophagus.

  • Esophageal spasms

  • Esophageal diverticula

  • Rupture of esophageal varices

Idiopathic mega-esophagus, Chagas disease, diffuse esophageal spasms, and scleroderma are equally among the pathologies that can affect the esophagus. To establish a precise diagnosis, different examinations are implemented. These examinations can include a fiberoptic endoscopy, a pulmonary X-ray, or a CT scan. For idiopathic mega-esophagus, X-ray imaging, endoscopies, and surgical treatment are recommended.

Symptoms

Esophageal pathologies can manifest by acidic regurgitations, burning sensations, swallowing difficulties, a feeling of an empty stomach, bloody vomiting, or brutal and violent thoracic pain.

Mediastinal syndrome is a compression of one of the organs situated in the mediastinum (i.e. aorta, heart, trachea, vena cava, pleura, lungs, or bronchial tubes). This syndrome manifests by respiratory difficulty, a cough, or a modification of the timbre of the voice, and pain.
